Wendy and Mike Monk’s regular look back at old motoring and motor sport items…

At the time of putting this newsletter for layout and print and waiting for qualifying for the Austrian F1 GP to start, we came across this pic of the opening lap of the Natal Winter Trophy Race at the Roy Hesketh Circuit that took place in July 1973 – 50 years ago!

The car/driver combinations represented some of the country’s finest motor sport competitors, and starting from front to back, they are:

Car #3 Eddie Keizan (Alex Blignaut/Lucky Strike Racing) Tyrrell-Ford; Car #1 Dave Charlton (Aldo Scribante/Lucky Strike Racing) Lotus 72D; Car #11 Paddy Driver (Team Wynns) McLaren M10B; partially hidden Car #8 Ian Scheckter (Team Gunston Chevron B25; Car #6 John Love (Team Gunston) Chevron B25; Car #2 John McNicol (Lucky Strike Racing) March 721; Car #5 Guy Tunmer (Paradise Beach Racing) March 722; unidentified car hidden behind Car #5; Car #10 Tony Martin (South Coast Motors) Chevron B20; Car #14 Derek Tunmer (Paradise Beach Racing) McLaren M10B; and Car #9 Jackie Pretorius (Team Clover) Brabham BT38.
