50 YEARS AGO

In February 1972, the VW Beetle became the world’s best selling model when it surpassed the previous title holder Ford Model T’s total production figure of  15 007 033 units. Fourteen years later, the Beetle was still in production in Mexico, Nigeria and Brazil.

Still on production figures, in 1972 the 10-millionth Toyota was built. In total car production terms, the company lay third behind GM and Ford followed by Nissan.

The first of the so-called ‘superminis’, the Renault 5, was launched.
