Queen’s Plate

On January 8 at a sizzling hot Kenilworth racecourse, Jet Dark stormed down the inside rail to win the prestigious Grade 1 L’Ormarins Queens Plate for the second year in succession. Bred at Drakenstein Stud and ridden by S’manga Khumalo, Jet Dark won the most coveted 1 600-metre race in South Africa. The ace jockey had everything under control and in the last 200 metres drew off to beat Kommetdieding. Rainbow Bridge finished third.

The Franschhoek Motor Museum Handicap was won by Bush Tracker, ridden by J Solomons. As usual, race goers could view some of the museum’s cars, each following the LQP’s traditional blue-and-white colour scheme. Those on display this year were a 1934 Mercedes-Benz W21, a 1953 BMW Isetta bubble car, a 1953 MG TF and a 1954 MG A.

First held in 1861, the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate remains as one of the oldest and most prestigious horse races in the country as well as being one of the best horse racing experiences in the world.
