LIVE TO RACE

On 25 November the second ten/ten Live to Race event got under way at FMM, when ladies and gents from around the Cape bring along their special sports cars and offer those who are battling cancer and other illnesses the opportunity for a ride. The museum was again chosen as the starting point, with everyone enjoying a tour of the displays followed by a cup of tea or coffee before heading out over the spectacular Franschhoek Pass. It was an honour for us to be involved once more although we should take a moment to remember those who sadly weren’t with us again this year.

To Joe and the team, keep up the good work. WH

ROCK STAR CARS

It might not be the biggest show in the Cape but it does have a very different feel about it, even though the cars aren’t the best examples of their breed or even the best runners. But almost every car that turned up at Jason Furness’ Rock Star Cars display had been in a movie or an advert. The show was held on 17 November at Heritage Square in the heart of Cape Town, which was a welcome change from the all-too-usual sports field. There was no entry fee asked and everyone was welcome, which saw a varied and interesting inner-city crowd view the exhibits rather than the regular petrol-heads. Something else that was different was the after party that was held at Detroit’s pub, which is a must-visit if you are car junkie. FMM put in an appearance and we are hoping to be up for that Oscar nomination… WH

CHRISTMAS CHEER

The L’Ormarins group of companies held its annual Christmas party on 30 November. The large marquee tent hired to host 300 employees for a sit-down lunch could not be erected because of the infamous ‘Cape Doctor’ that howled at speeds of up to 55 km/h. Enter Plan B: one of FMM’s display halls had to be emptied at short notice and, needless to say, it turned out to be the perfect venue for the party and even sported a dance floor!  A very big thank you to Wayne and the FMM team as well as Jo-Anne, our hospitality and functions coordinator, who made the event possible and who helped clean the hall and had everything spic-and-span and ready for business as usual the next morning. AROUND THE WORLD IN A MODEL T

In late November I had the pleasure of meeting with Dutchman Dirk Regter and his wife Trudy during their short stop in Cape Town as part of a global tour they are undertaking in a 1915 Ford Model T, supporting the work of SOS Children’s Villages around the world. Dirk and Trudy started their epic journey on June 22 from Den Hague in the Netherlands and the trip will take them through all the continents of the world and will cover over 85 000 kilometres. So far they have driven through Belgium, France, Italy, Greece, Jordan, Israel, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Namibia, Botswana and South Africa.

From Cape Town the car is being shipped to South America from where it will travel along the west coast through Mexico, the United States, Canada, India, China, Mongolia, Siberia and Russia before returning to the Netherlands.

During this unique round-the-world trip, by means of a worldwide sponsorship campaign Dirk and Trudy are raising funds for projects run by the international development organisation SOS Children’s Villages, and numerous sites will be visited in several countries along the way. The tour can be followed on the website www.TFordworldtour.org. MM
